Alita: Battle Angel videogame exists but hardly anyone knows

Alita: Battle Angel is a cult classic manga series that exploded in popularity after James Cameron’s masterfully done film adaptation. But, what a lot of people don’t know, there’s an Alita game out there.

Earlier this year, along with Twentieth Century Fox, James Cameron and his production company, Lightstorm Entertainment, turned a classic manga into live-action movie. Despite little advertising it turned out to be the highest grossing manga-to-film adaptation ever.

Alita: Battle Angel received overwhelming praise from fans scoring 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and since then a petition to greenlight a sequel has reached 80,000 signatures.

Although we are confident we will eventually get a sequel–possibly even a trilogy–fans, unfortunately, may need to wait awhile. James Cameron and his production company, Lightstorm Entertainment, are currently focusing all their resources and efforts on the long-awaited Avatar sequel. Avatar 2 is slotted to be released in 2021 and already boasts an all-star cast. So it’s not likely that we will hear any news on the Alita sequel any time soon.

However, there is something you could do to kill the time… and that’s play the official Battle Angel Alita videogame! When the manga series was at the pique of its popularity Yukito Productions published an action role-playing game called Gunnm: Martian Memory (Gunnm is the original Japanese title for Battle Angel Alita).

The Alita: Battle Angel videogame

In Gunnm: Martian Memory you advance through the a unique story that begins at Alita’s origins. The player navigates Alita (known as Gally in Japan) through 3D environments, exploring areas and interacting with NPCs, including other characters who appear in the series. In story mode, the player has the option of entering into Battle Mode, or avoiding combat by running past enemies. In fights involving multiple opponents, the player fights each in turn. Although Alita does not earn experience points, she can still upgrade her capabilities of her cyborg body that she uses, becoming progressively more powerful in offence and defence.

As you progress through the main story you can do hunter-warrior missions and collect bounties to earn a bit of money or even participate in motorball games! For at game that released over 20 years ago, it actually pretty awesome.

There is one catch, though; the game released exclusively in Japan so all the text is in Japanese. So, if you don’t know Japanese it might be pretty difficult to follow. You could use the game to teach you Japanese, I guess, or just add it to your Alita collectable gear.

As a big flippin’ thank you to the wonderful and dedicated Alita fanbase we want to give one lucky person a copy of Gunnm: Martian Memory. Since it is a 20 year old PlayStation game, though, it will be a second-hand copy and we can’t really make any guarantees to the condition of the actual disc (it’s pretty hard to find a copy these days), but if you have a PlayStation that can play Japanese games, it should work just fine. Still, it is an awesome collectable for any Alita fan!
