Has Johnny Cage been written out of the Mortal Kombat movie to accommodate for Cole Turner? Lewis Tan’s last tweet might indicate just that.
We know that Lewis Tan was cast as the role of Johnny Cage in the Mortal Kombat movie, but that doesn’t necessarily mean Johnny Cage is in the film. All signs are pointing to a character replacement of the Van Damme inspired fighter by a completely new character.

The Hashtag Show allegedly obtained a leaked copy of the casting sheet for the Mortal Kombat movie back in July. The casting sheet revealed that a new, unheard of, character called Cole Turner, Sonya Blade, and Kano would be the lead characters in the movie. All the characters from the first Mortal Kombat game but one were revealed to be in the film, and that’s Johnny Cage.
A source close to the movie told us that Lewis Tan’s character forms a romantic relationship with Sonya Blade and they would be the films main leads. In the videogame series Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade are romantically involved, so it seems very likely that Cole Turner is the Johnny Cage replacement.
The casting sheet describes Cole Tuner in the following manner: “Lead Male. 30s. A brand new character to the MK franchise. Cole is a struggling and widowed boxer who cares more about his young daughter than anything. He is incredibly determined and refuses to quit in the face of fantastical adversity.”
Lewis Tan is Cole Turner?
It has not yet been revealed who Lewis Tan is playing in the movie except that he is the main character in the film which leads us to believe that they may be waiting to do a big reveal. Although it is possibility, we believe that Lewis isn’t playing Johnny Cage, but rather his replacement, Cole Turner.
Lewis Tan tweeted a video of himself training for the new Mortal Kombat movie and in that video he is training in boxing. We don’t know a lot about Turner, but we do know that he is a widowed boxer.
One of the best parts of my career is getting to train with masters of many styles around the world, sharpening all my weapons and exploring all aspects of martial arts for films and for real life. Maybe the producers are on the fence about replacing Johnny Cage with a brand new character and are testing the waters before they make an official decision. Or maybe they are just waiting to introduce this new character as DLC in Mortal Kombat 11 before they announce him as the films lead.
What are your thoughts? Excited to see the introduction of a new character in the Mortal Kombat movie or would you prefer they stuck with Johnny Cage. Let us know in the comments below.
