Call of Duty: Modern War introduced a new, improved, Ground War game mode this weekend that reminds us of the old PlayStation 3 classic, MAG.

Once upon a time Sony/Zipper Interactive released the most ambitious first-person shooter game ever. The game was called MAG (Massive Action Game) and albeit not being the success it should have been, it still won the hearts of thousand of gamers around the world.

This weekend everyone who downloaded the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare open beta got to test the epic new Ground War game mode. Although not as massive as MAG‘s 256 player battles, this new 64 player game mode manages to capture some of the game’s former glory.

MAG used a new server architecture to support online battles with up to 256 players, with users divided into eight-player squads, with four squads forming a platoon, and four platoons forming a company. Each squad is led by a player who has advanced through the game’s ranking system. Character statistics and development also increase with frequent gameplay. The players assigned leadership positions are able to simultaneously direct the battle and participate directly in combat.

The maps are bigger and there are both ground and air vehicles. The game also wastes no time in throwing you right into the middle of the action. There is no cool-down timer preventing you from respawning immediately after you die. And, if your team is performing well, you can spawn at one of the captured points or right with your squad mates.

A lot of people are comparing this new game mode to Battlefield, but anyone who has played both games extensively knows that Ground War is different enough to the classic Battlefield game mode to make it stand out.

Modern Warfare Ground War is epic

Battlefield has bigger maps but less multi-level structures, creating a more of a large-scale war feel whereas Ground War’s vehicles aren’t nearly as fleshed out but there are a lot more areas for insane close quarter fire fights. Both games are great but Ground War is more similar to MAG for the aforementioned reasons.

People are still begging Sony for MAG 2 but unfortunately they’ve remained quiet on the topic. There aren’t many games that have managed capture the insane fun that MAG was but Ground War comes close.
