Steven Spielberg is a name synonymous with great cinema. He has let a little magic into our lives with his movies and will for years to come. The king of the big-screen has no plans of retiring his crown.
When we hear the name Spielberg our mind immediately jumps to classics like E.T., Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, and more recently Ready Player One. Some of these movies have left us with some unforgettable memories that we carried with us into adulthood.
- Why do critics hate Alita: Battle Angel?
- Do Phoenix’s Joker and Pattinson’s Batman exist in the same universe?
A new generation, new movies, and new memories. Steven Spielberg has announced that he is working on a lot of projects; some new, some old and retold. Here are 5 upcoming Spielberg films that he is either producing or direction that you probably didn’t know about.
Indiana Jones 5
The Indiana Jones movie series is one of the best, ever. That’s if you consider it a trilogy, like a lot of die-hard fans. A lot of people have wiped Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull clean out of their minds. i guess they didn’t really fancy the twist ending and the fact that it seemed like they were trying to crown Shia LaBeouf as the new Indy. Shia LaBeouf has ruined any chance of stepping in for Harrison Ford with his series of online meltdowns. But don’t worry. it has been confirmed that Harrison will return for Indiana Jones 5… but he’s so old.
Harrison Ford will be 77 in July making him 27 years older than Sean Connery was in the Last Crusade 30 years ago. The Indiana Jones movies are known for there high-speed action so it will be interesting to see how a 77 year old Harrison Ford will pull it off.
The Adventures of Tintin: Prisoner of the Sun
We’ve had to wait bloody long to get any updates on Tintin. Finally, Spielberg has confirmed that not only is a sequel in the works but Tintin will be a trilogy.
The Adventures of Tintin aka The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn brought two of the most creative cinematic minds together – Spielberg and Jackson – in 2011. The 2011 blockbuster film had Spielberg trademark high-pace action set pieces and Jackson’s ground-breaking CGI visuals. The movie has stood the test of time, 8 years on and it still looks mind blowing.
To save his mother from certain death, young Jack Sawyer enters a parallel world known as the Territories in search of a powerful talisman. Sound familiar? This movie is based on the 1984 fantasy novel of the same name by Stephen King and Peter Straub.
This will be the first time that King and Spielberg will have collaborated together on a project. And looking back at their individual accomplishments you would be a bit loopy if you weren’t as excited as I am for this film. Although Spielberg himself will not be directing, as executive producer, he will be overseeing all aspects of production and has personally appointed Mike Barker (Fargo, The Handmaid’s Tale) as the director.
West Side Story
West Side Story is an American classic. It’s a lighthearted All-American and musical take on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
The story is set in the Upper West Side neighborhood in New York City in the mid 1950s, an ethnic, blue-collar neighborhood (in the early 1960s, much of the neighborhood was cleared in an urban renewal project for Lincoln Center, which changed the neighborhood’s character). The musical explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds.
The film already boasts an impressive cast-list with Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) and the talent Maddie Ziegler – the young dancer from the Sia videos – ass the leads. And it is one of the few films on the list actually directed by Steven Spielberg.
Fun fact: Spielberg is also producing a biopic on Bernstein, the composer to the West Side Story musical, starring Bradley Cooper.
Not a whole lot is known on the third Gremlins movie except that the screenplay is being written by Carl Ellsworth (Last House on the Left) which means we may anticipate a much darker story than we’ve previously seen.
We did receive an email from a reliable source claiming that the new Gremlins movie is a prequel and it is set in China. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if there is any truth to this. The current working title for Gremlins 3 is Curse of the Mogwai which hints at a origin story.
Did you know?
- Twilight heart-throb Robert Pattinson is the new Batman.
- Critics hate the new live-action Aladdin movie.
