The entire cast of Futurama is excited to return for a reboot and Disney might be interested in bringing the hit animated series back.
It’s almost been 10 years since the final episode of the hit adult science fiction animation Futurama aired and now there’s hope that Disney might bring the series back exclusively on Star and Hulu.
Futurama is revered as one of the greatest animated shows of all, it was even called the “greatest animated show ever” by Entertainment Weekly. Sadly, there was a conspiracy of sorts at Fox to kill off the series and it never got the attention it deserved.
Even the show’s creator, Matt Groening, believed that Fox never really wanted Futurama to succeed. The network kept changing the show’s time slot and even deliberately aired the episodes out of order before eventually cancelling the show 2003. But at this point Futurama had garnered a cult following and are fans demanding more. Comedy Central later revived the series and ordered more seasons and a direct to DVD that was eventually split into another season.
Fox hated Futurama.
During an interview with Mother Jones, Groening was asked about working in with Fox. He had some not-so-great things to say: “You can’t believe what babies people are. It’s really like being in junior high school.” Groening claimed that Fox executives weren’t fans of The Simpsons either.
“You can’t expect people to behave in their own best interest. It’s in Fox’s best interest for this show to be a success, but they’d rather mess with the show and have them fail, than allow creators independence and let them succeed … They don’t like The Simpsons at Fox,” he added.
Now that Disney own the rights to Futurama it is getting the love it deserves. Futurama is one of the most streamed series on Disney+ Star (non-USA alternative to Hulu), and according to our sources they are very interested in bringing it back.
“They [Disney] are very interested in ordering more episodes. I all just depends on whether they can get Matt Groening on board,” the source revealed.
Cast ready for (re)launch!
Maurice LaMarche, who voices Kif Kroker and others, told Syfy Wire that the cast, creators and crew of the show are all reportedly keen to work on more episodes of the show, should Disney order more episodes.
“Sure, we all talk about it. If they [Disney] were to come up with the right offer, but I know Matt [Groening] would love to do it again,” he said. “David Cohen [co-creator and producer], I think, might be into it. I think semi-retirement is finally wearing on him. He had to get back to writing on The Simpsons just to keep busy.”
“I have to leave it up to the Powers That Be, but I know everybody’s into it, including the cast. It would be great to do it before Billy West [Fry, Dr. Zoidberg, and Professor Farnsworth voice actor] turns 80,” LaMarche said.
So there is definitely hope that Fry, Bender and the rest of the Planet Express crew will return for — at least — one more epic space adventure in a Futurama reboot..
