The Godfather takes you on a cinematic journey like no other. Spanning over 18 years, we get to see Michael Corleone’s (Al Pacino) life unfold before our very eyes. Al Pacino won two Oscars for his portrayal of the hardened mafioso; for Best Supporting Actor in 1972 and Best Actor in The Godfather Part II in 1975. The trilogy itself earned over 9 Oscars.

Many believed that The Godfather would be a box office bomb. According to SBS, after a series of of box office failures, Francis Ford Coppola was thought of as bit of a Hollywood joke. He also failed to book what was considered A-list talent. Believe it or not, Marlon Brando was deemed a ‘has been’. At the time, even Al Pacino, James Caan and Diane Keaton were considered B-grade actors. The director even cast his sister Talia Shire in a central role. But the film was such a smash-hit that it was instantly dubbed a classic and even Talia Shire got an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress in The Godfather Part II.
